The support structure is attached at the row ends and run to the end of the trellis system where a ratchet strainer is installed. In retrofit applications an extension is used to support the wires approximately 2-3 feet above the crop on vineyards and cherry crops. On lower bush crops it is placed at a height where one can move machinery freely under the netting canopy.
The wire is threaded through the side selvage on each side of the netting by means of using electrical tape and attaching the end of the wire to the cord that comes threaded through the selvage along both edges of each piece of netting. Just feed the netting on to the wire. The netting is spread above the crop.
On the outside perimeters of the field, side panels are used. For vineyards, these are four meters in width and are attached by threading wire through one side of the netting only and allowing the other edge to drape on the ground.
A couple of methods to secure netting to the ground are
the use of water filled hoses or 1" thin wall irrigation pipe, plugged off at each end, or wood strapping with holes drilled through each piece approximately 5 feet apart. Use large nails, loose in the drilled hole but can be pushed into the ground. At the end of the harvest simply lift the boards up from the ground and turn them over. The nails fall out to be used again the next year.
After the harvest, simply slide the netting to the end of the rows, tie it down, and cover it with black pallet wrap or black plastic and wait for the next harvest.
